Quinn vs Soda

  1. The reason that soda "explodes" when the bottle is shaken up has to do with the carbon dioxide in the bottle. The carbon dioxide is used to make soda "bubbly," and since the vast majority of it can't dissolve, it seeks to escape the bottle. When you put Mentos in, the carbon dioxide inside the soda expands rapidly, resulting in a tower of foam ejecting from the bottle. This is because when the gelatin and other ingredients in the mentos meet with potassium benzoate and carbion dioxide in the coke, a process called nucleation occurs, resulting in the masses of foam.

  2. The addition of 4 mentos to this coke was too much for Quin to handle. The plan was to cap the soda and run, but the pressure built up too quickly and he couldn't get the cap on in time. As a result, he was covered in a rocket blast of coke as he wrested to get the cap on. Coke and mentos can be a weapon as we learned here.

  3. When mentos and diet coke are mixed there is a eruption of foam out the top of the bottle. This eruption is do to the very small pores in the candy and the carbon dioxide mixes and causes this explosion. When mentos are dropped in there is about a second delay in the reaction. Which means there is a violent reaction happening instantly with the coke and mentos. This experiment also works with other carbonated soda's but diet coke is known to result in the best explosion.

  4. This is physics because when the mentos is dropped in the Diet Coke a chemical reaction occurs. This chemical reaction causes the diet coke to explode because of the chemical energy growing and growing. The Diet Cokes chemical energy grows larger than what the Diet Coke bottle can contain therefore it explodes.

  5. When the bubbles of Carbon Dioxide contact the small pores on the mentos, the start a process called nucleation. The small pores on the mentos cause the soda to release a lot of carbon dioxide in the form of bubbles. Too many for Quinn to handle in that short of a time period.

  6. Also the force caused by the chemical energy was too much for Quinn to handle causing the coke to spray everywhere as he attempted to cap the bottle.

  7. There is a massive release of energy when mentos are combined with coke as result of chemical potential energy between two chemicals in the substances. The chemical reaction between the two causes a rapid expansion and bubbling of the coke, and the small container keeps it from expanding naturally. As a result the coke shoots upwards quickly because it is the only point of release possible causing a fountain of coke.

  8. This great release of energy can be attributed to mainly one circumstance. The two main parts present in this experiment, the coke and mentos did not react well with each other. After this happened, the chemical energy caused coke to shoot up exponentially high.

  9. When the mentos and the coke were combined the coke erupted into a fountain of soda. The soda was so strong that if Quinn was able to get the cap on in time the pressure would of been so great that the it would of burst. But, the instead when the soda erupted Quinn was left to the spray of soda because when he tried putting the cap on the soda shifted directions and aimed for Quinn

  10. Quinn was drenched in coke because of a chemical reaction called nucleation which is when bubbles of gas form in a liquid such as carbonated water. When the mentors were dropped into the coke this caused the CO2 to be released rapidly by collecting quickly on the small pores on the mentos then bubbling to the surface in a mass amount of gas and foam funneling itself into the narrow neck of the bottle causing it to increase pressure then shooting out of the top in a Geiser like spray to Quinn's dismay.
